The Bad Environment Club Pills/Bad Pills collection is a 5000 supply collection that was released on July 3, 2023. The mint took place on Magic Eden for 2.5 SOL. Minters had the chance of minting three (3) tiers of Pills that had different corresponding discounts to their products. The discounts are discussed in the utility section.

The Characters Collection

The Bad Environment Club Character Collection will be released by the end of September. The collection will be a free mint to all Gold Pill holders. They will also be featured in stories created by the founder, Lite.

There are also five 1/1 Characters that have been auctioned prior to the official launch of the Characters.

The Bad Environment Drops

A core aspect of the Bad Environment universe, the Drops will range from physical merchandise, digital collectibles and social experiments.

The Bad Environment Club has already completed their first merchandise drop supplied by Ormuza known manufacturer for Web2-Web3 apparel. The merchandise is available to the public but Pill holders were able to access tiered discounts. Payments will be accepted in SOL, USDC and FIAT.

The merchandise drops are to be made of 100% cotton. The Hoodie being around 460G and the Tee for 280G.

Their first drop included 3 items in the collection. Here are the samples of the merchandise:

Front Front Front

Each piece of merchandise has an NFC tag that will claim and support its authenticity as a legitimate item from the Bad Environment Club Brand.

The Bad Environment Club Business Model

Incorporating a hybrid Web2/Web3 production model, utilizing a frictionless approach, and offering high-quality consumer goods, BEC aims to seamlessly introduce Web3 technology, particularly Solana, to the masses.

BEC plans to unveil a new experience each month, adopting a model reminiscent of well-known brands like MSCHF and Supreme. Central to their strategy is the creation of artificial scarcity, a psychological technique designed to trigger FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and generate excitement among users.

Utility

The Pill Collection

At the time of writing this and before the Character mint, here are the current discounts and drop advantages (time) available for each tier.

  • Blue Pills: 5% Discount on all drops / 5 minute head start for Drops.
  • Red Pills: 7% Discount on all drops / 10 minute head start for Drops.
  • Gold Pills: 10% Discount on all drops / 15 minute head start for Drops.

Just recently, in preparation for the Character mint, all Blue Pills and Red Pills can be merged into a Gold Pill. This will be important for the Character collection. Burning of the pills will end 1 week prior to the launch of the PFPs.

  • 4 Blue Pills: 1 Gold Pill for Drops
  • 2 Red Pills: 1 Gold Pill for Drops

The Gold Pill comes with other utilities such as:

  • 1 Gold Pill = 1 Free Character

The Character Collection

At the time of writing this review, more details are to be announced about the character collection. The main utility for them is that they will have the highest tier of discounts at 15%. They have the same benefits as the Pills collection but a higher discount tier on merchandise.

At this stage, the discounts do not stack.

Review

In it’s essence, Bad Environment Club is not an NFT collection / project. It’s a brand that aims to work its way to bring people from the outside, to the inside. Their drops will act as their way to tap into the masses and the mainstream clothing market. This is why their platform also includes the use of fiat payments. Their website is simple and clean, requiring little effort to purchase the drops.

Bad Environment Club and “Popping the Bubble”:

This is definitely a unique take as mass adaptation for anything related to crypto and NFTs still presents a number of barriers (even if organizations and companies are slowly leaning towards it). This kind of approach will initially soften up the masses to consuming an NFT / Web3 related product and can ease the way into adoption later on.

Amongst all of the factors on why I consider Bad Environment Club a project worth keeping your eyes on, this is probably the one I like the most. There is a thick wall between Web2 and Web3 communities, with the former being very much closed off to idea of Crypto / NFTs. The way that Bad Environment Club opens the doors between these communities is through their brand, with their merchandise probably being their strongest option for now. There is a whole untapped market potential and as it stands, Bad Environment Club might be one of the more successful Web3 native names to breakout into the mainstream scene of clothing brands.

This is still speculative however, as BEC is marketing towards a more mainstream audience it will still need a great deal of planning and execution. Brands are not easily built (and need a stroke of luck if I’m being completely honest).

Strong Points:

  • If we are to treat Bad Environment Club as a merch / clothing business, then one of the factors that greatly supports it is the team. A founder with a prominent name and individuals responsible for business & sales, overall art direction, design, and media related to advertisement. The community aspect and socials are well managed too with an active designated team that helps mediate the atmosphere within and outside of the respective server.
  • As with any brand, the noise it generates can make or break it. The founder, Lite, is very vocal about the project on his personal account, actively sharing the story of the brand. Storytelling is a powerful tool when used properly, especially in marketing. It evokes emotion and attachment, driving product sales along the way.
  • Bad Environment Club has also been active in a number of live events including the most recent live event from Bankmen Finance. The team will also be present during Solana’s Breakpoint event on October wherein they will be releasing their most recent drop which is a collaboration with DRiP.
  • This along with having prominent names in the space and certain ambassadors representing the brand is also a step in the right direction.
  • The collaboration with DRiP and the release of their TCG collection has also brought more eyes toward the project. Also, owning 4 rare drops from the collection allows you to be put in a raffle for the free Character PFP. Depending on your luck, this is already free value.
  • The team has also been doing “Interviews” for a few weeks now wherein you get a chance to get a Character PFP even without holding a Gold Pill. This is open for everyone and as someone who attended the interview, I can honestly say that their approach is commendable as it had a light atmosphere around it and allowed even those without experience in Web3 / NFTs to participate.
  • As with my previous review, I chose to put the art of the collection last because while it is certainly crucial, the business and marketing aspect of the project still remain the primary factors, personally. That being said, the art of Character collection and the pills are still top notch. The doors are still open for an anime-inspired PFP in the Solana NFT ecosystem. Their current merchandise designs also deserve praise as well.

Weak Points:

  • While there has been sufficient information regarding the Blue Pills and Red Pills collection, those who may miss the burning event for a Gold Pill might feel a sense of being left out if they aren’t frequent in visiting or getting updated in the server. This in turn will lead to questions on what will happen to the remaining Blue and Red Pills.
  • I give high regards to the teams eagerness to address the community’s concerns and suggestions however, operating as a business, this may act as a double edged blade. We cannot deny that there will be times that holders will only be addressing personal concerns and benefits while disregarding the project’s business direction and initiatives.
  • While I personally like the current merchandise designs, they do revolve around the culture of web3 / NFTs which may cause some hesitations from the outside consumer. I reckon this is still part of their brand but there might be a way to integrate a more mainstream approach to this that can also help solidify Bad Environment Club’s brand and limit any kind of hesitation towards it from an outside perspective.
  • As with all businesses and brands, Bad Environment Club will need a strong catalyst once it goes full swing. This will take time and raises the question on how the NFT aspect of the project will keep the interest of the holders and how the team will address any other forms of value that the community will eventually look for.

Conclusion:

Personally, I always have reservations when it comes to NFT projects under the Brands / IP category and I would be lying if I didn’t say that what gravitated me towards Bad Environment Club was primarily the art for the Character collection. The reason why I took interest is that while they are a Web3 native project, I consider their approach of “Popping the Bubble” as probably one of the better models in terms of onboarding people to at least the idea of being involved in Web3. The culture around streetwear resonates with a huge number of consumers and since that is what the design of BEC is going for, then I don’t see why it shouldn’t play out if the business aspect is handled correctly.

I am very much keen to see how Bad Environment Club will play out as a collection and as a brand. There has been good strides on their end but the most probable barrier that exists will still be the general resistance of the masses to anything related to NFTs and Web3. I will be on the lookout for what their strategy will be, post Characters mint and see what kind of marketing approach they will take. If you are interested as well, I encourage you to take a look at the project and team and arrive at your conclusions.
